Broken Windows Policing WITHOUT Police
by John Tillman
Chairman & CEO at American Culture Project
It’s hard to commit a loved one against their will. It’s harder to watch them die slowly on the streets. In the 1970s, the courts made involuntary commitment nearly impossible. My family felt that firsthand as my mother battled paranoid schizophrenia. Now, with mental illness and addiction devastating the homeless population, Trump’s order gives families the tool we never had. Is it aggressive? Yes. But letting people waste away under bridges is far crueler. We can’t arrest our way out of homelessness. And we can’t subsidize it away, either.
Real help sometimes means hard choices.
